About the artist A.L.Hammonds (Albert Lawrence Hammonds):
A.L Hammonds was born in Bilston, West Midlands, England and grew up surrounded by engineering and industry, his father ran a Shire horse based haulage business. It is from these beginnings that formed the foundations for his artwork and attention to detail. For example, a drawing of a steam locomotive will look like an exact scaled down version of the original. He could produce a picture of photographic quality, using oils, pastels, conté crayon, charcoal, pencil or ink. He studied at the Royal College Of Art, London and then lectured at Halesowen College, and finally as the Head of Fine Art at Bournville College of Art.
His varied work has been exhibited throughout the UK, Austria & Germany, and has been featured on UK radio, as well as television, newspapers, magazines & books in the UK, Austria, Germany & Switzerland. He was a founder member of the Guild of Railway Artists and to this day, the Lawrence Hammonds Award Rose Bowl is issued to the winner of the GRA's Picture of the Year Award.
A.L Hammonds' work & private commissions are on permanent display at the following locations:- Eisenbahn Museum, Vienna. Deutsches Museum, Munich. National Railway Museum, York. Dudley Art Gallery, Dudley. Warwick Castle. Queen Elizabeth Hospital, Birmingham. Royal College, London. Royal Mail, Birmingham. Assay Office, Birmingham. Cadburys, Birmingham. Walsall Litho, Walsall. Barclays Bank, Halesowen. Further work is held in private collections throughout the World. His artwork was used extensively through the German 'Eisenbahn Journal' magazine and the 150th anniversary of the Bavarian railways (150 Jahre Eisenbahn in Bayern)
Sadly, A.L.Hammonds passed away in 1994.
