    Description

This print is restored from an early 1940's ACL postcard of "The Champion".  It
connected New York City and Miami in 24 ½ hours and was a streamlined service that operated from 1939 until Amtrak took it over in 1971. A 1960’s dinner menu shows a steak platter could be had for only .95 and Burgundy wine for $.75/glass. ACL’s rival Seaboard Airline offered the Meteor Express between the highly competitive East Coast to Florida routes.
The Atlantic Coast Lines was created by a Baltimore investor, William T. Walters, who scrapped together several regional southeastern railroads following the civil war which were consolidated into the ACL in 1900. It was primarily a southeastern railroad running connecting mid-Atlantic states to Florida and branch lines throughout the Carolinas. Its headquarters was in Jacksonville, Florida and it ran a double line from Jacksonville to Richmond, Virginia. Its famous passenger lines included the “Champion” from New York to Tampa and Miami, Florida Special from New York to Miami and The Miamian from Washington DC to Miami. With the Illinois Central, it also ran the City of Miami from Chicago to Miami.
In 1967, the ACL merged with its rival Seaboard Air Line RR to become the Seaboard Coast Line and it was eventually absorbed by CSX, which still retains ACL’s Jacksonville headquarters.
This print is restored and printed on gloss paper with Canon inks guaranteed for 100 years without fading.
