ca1890s GUNTHERMANN TIN WIND UP / CLOCKWORK FROG WEARING TAIL COAT TOY

Very rare and original, ca1890’s Hand Painted Tin, Gunthermann Clockwork / Wind-up Toy Frog dressed in a tailcoat. This wonderful, late 19th century, Clockwork Toy Frog measures 6” tall and 2 1/2” by 3 3/4” at the base.
The Frog sits on the wind up mechanism with a tin wheel between his feet. When the wind up mechanism is engaged the Toy rolls forward across the floor. Although unmarked, the Toy has been identified by catalogers as having been manufactured by Gunthermann.
The S.G. Gunthermann Company of Nuremberg, Germany was founded by Sifried Gunthermann in 1877. The Company began producing tinplate mechanical vehicles in 1898 as well as a number of comic and character wind-ups in the early 1900s. When the founder died in 1890, his widow married Adolph Weigel. Beginning ion 1890 the Toys produced carried a maker's mark in the form of a shield inside circle with the initials "A.S.G.W.". Wiegels initials were removed following his death in 1919.
This wonderful, Gunthermann Wind-Up Frog is in very good condition and displays beautifully. The wind-up mechanism is complete and in excellent working condition. The Toy came to us identified as having “outstanding original surface paint” however we believe that the surfaces of the frog’s head and his tailcoat have been restored / repainted and there have been professional repairs at the hips. A very old price of “.75” is inked on the Frog’s left leg. Overall the Toy is very charming and displays beautifully!!
