The ALCo Century 636 was the most powerful single-engine Diesel-electric
locomotive constructed by the American Locomotive Company. Its 251 prime
mover produced 3,600 horsepower. C636’s rode on trucks of all-new design,
known as
“
high adhesion
”
or “Hi-Ad.” Visually it’s similar to the Century 630,
but can be distinguished by the intercooler box. Despite many innovative
features, the C636 demonstrators suffered consistent problems and in the
end could not hold its own.
PRR ordered 15 new C636’s just before it was merged into PennCentral.
They were numbered 6330–6344, and lasted in service until they became
Conrail units 6780-6794. Most were quickly lettered with crude initials
less attractive than the PennCentral’s simple white markings.
Andy gave his striking C636 rendering an almost foreboding look,
as if foreshadowing the imminent end of the Alco and Conrail legacies.
