GM&O purchased a total of 54 new FA1s and 37 FB1
(boosters) from Alco. The first, GM&O #700, was the original
Alco FA1 demonstrator of 1946. Interestingly, the first group
of FAs delivered retained the original headlight casing de-
sign, along with the curved trim piece just to the rear of the
cab side window – as on the FA1 demonstrator. GM&O #718,
depicted in this dramatic art, has this original headlight and
curved trim piece (also a design feature of the Alco PA1).
Later production models of GM&O FA1s (and all FAs)
eliminated the curved trim piece, and the headlight casing
was redesigned to extend above the nose. All GM&O FAs
and FBs were retired by the late 1960s. #718 is seen here,
late in her career, doing freight drilling duty in the Jackson,
MS area. A mighty powerful image!
