    Description

This Bern Hill poster was commissioned for General Electric's Electro-Motive Division (EMD) and features an aerial view of the San Antonio Railroad Station with the Texas Special. Bern Hill was a freehand artist famous for his marketing work for Electro-Motive Division in the 1950’s. It is part of a series of promotional posters for GM's EMD Unit featuring their customer's trains.
The M-K-T began as the "Union Pacific - Southern Branch", but it was better known as the "Katy Line". The railroad ran between St. Louis and Texas with extensive routes throughout Oklahoma, Missouri, and eastern Kansas.  One of the more unusual railroad spectacles to ever occur was a staged publicity event in 1896 in which 40,000 people watched two steam engines with six cars each charge at each other at full speed. Without consideration for safety, the crash and explosion killed 3 persons and injured several others in an event advertised as "The Crash at Crush". The Katy's flagship passenger services included "The Texas Special" that ran between St. Louis and San Antonio with the Frisco Railroad. The Katy merged with Missouri Pacific in 1988 and eventually became part of the Union Pacific Railroad.
