Description
This print is restored from an early Northern Pacific Railroad advertisement that commemorates the exploration of William Clark, Merriwether Lewis, and their band of explorers as they mapped the West. The NPs rail route follows largely in the tracks of their expedition. The Northern Pacific Railroad operated for over 100 years connecting the upper Midwest with the Western States. With a charter from Congress in 1864, the railroad helped to open the West for farming and herding. A push to complete the eastern and western branches was financed with land-grants and the golden spike was finally driven by President Grant in 1883. The trademarked emblem of the NP may look familiar because it is actually drawn famous 'ying-yang' symbol that is also on the South Korean flag.
The Northern Pacific flagship passenger service was the North Coast Limited that connected Seattle to Chicago and connected in the Twin Cities on the Burlington Route tracks. The dining cars of the Northern Pacific specialized in serving giant baked potatoes, re-purposing the previously unpopular giant potatoes of the Yakima Valley. In 1970 the Northern Pacific merged with the CB&Q's Burlington Route to create the Burlington Northern. To this day, BNSF still carries the "Northern" in its name from this fallen flag railroad.
