Description
This print is a restored Pennsylvania Railroad advertisement "Washington City Beautiful". The 1935 poster is a painting by Edward Mason Eggleston, who was known for his commercial art evoking the female figure in a fantasy or fashionable setting. He painted for the PRR during what was termed the "golden age of illustration". Washington DC was a critical terminus for the PRR's passenger traffic and featured trains including "The Congressional" and "The Senator" that ran from Boston to New York City to Philadelphia to Washington DC.The Pennsylvania Railroad (PRR) got its start in 1846, when the State of Pennsylvania chartered a railroad that would run from Philadelphia to Harrisburg and compete with the canal trade. By 1852 the railroad reached Pittsburgh and by 1859 it had reached Chicago and was the first major east coast railroad to make that important connection. The Pennsylvania ran track throughout the East and as far as St. Louis. The PRR had over 11,000 miles of trackage at its peak and was the largest freight carrier in the country. It competed on the highly competitive route between the East Coast and Chicago and St. Louis which was not profitable given the steep competition. At its peak, one dozen PRR trains a day plied between New York and Chicago.
The PRR also had most of its Northeastern route electrified, mirroring European railroads at that time. After years of struggling, the PRR merged with its rival New York Central in 1968 to create the Penn Central. This broke union quickly collapsed and forced the creation of Conrail. Many of PRR's former trackage is operated by today's NS.
