    Description

This restored print features the Southern Pacific's "Daylight Limited" passenger service. The Daylight limited travel between San Francisco and Los Angeles. It made the trip in 12 hours and later in only 9h 45m. It was operated by a 4-8-2 SP streamlined locomotive.
The forerunner of the Southern Pacific (SP) was the Central Pacific Railroad which the Union Pacific at Promontory, Utah to create the first transcontinental railroad. A series of mergers created the Southern Pacific Railroad in 1870. It was not a southern railroad, but a truly Californian railroad that connected the West to Texas and finally terminating in Chicago. In 1929 the Southern Pacific acquired the Cotton Belt Railroad, which extended its trackage from Texas up to St. Louis. The SP had many popular inter-California and long-distance routes, some of which are still carried by today's Amtrak.
In 1988 the SP was taken over by the parent company of the Rio Grande Railroad and finally in 1996, it merged with its longtime rival Union Pacific. An interesting fact is that the now merged phone company Sprint had its start as a telecommunications subsidiary of Southern Pacific as the Southern Pacific Communications Company to compete with the AT&T monopoly.
This print is restored from the original and printed on gloss cardstock photo paper which is acid-free and with Canon inks that are guaranteed for 100 years without fading.
