    Description

This 1944 Union Pacific patriotic war era poster highlights the importance of railroads in the war effort. The UP was incorporated by an act of Congress in 1862, where it met the Central Pacific in Promontory, Utah to create the first transcontinental route in 1869. The transcontinental route originally ran from Sacramento to Council Bluffs, Iowa, and was also known as the Overland Route. The UP later extended to Portland Oregon and continued to absorb smaller railroads giving it a large network throughout the West. The UP introduced refrigerated rail cars to expedite the travel of fresh fruit from California to the rest of the country. The Union Pacific is also famous for the largest and most powerful steam locomotive of its time, the 4-8-8-4 "Big Boy" that hauled heavy freight trains over the Wasatch Mountains. Numerous mergers in the latter end of the 20th Century kept the UP nameplate alive while it gained more trackage in its 23 states and became the second-largest railroad in the US. A number of its former passenger routes are still operated by Amtrak.
