    Description

    A very attractive
chromolithograph of the The Old Spanish Custom House, New Orleans.  Reputed to have been built before 1730 the picturesque Old Spanish Custom House is one of the oldest buildings in New Orleans.  It is Colonial in design with pillared galleries and quaint dormer windows and is as sound today as when it was first built.
It is now a private residence.  Under the Spanish regime its principal purpose was to exact toll from flatboatmen and traders  who brought their wares down the Mississippi from the North.  These men were bold and adventurous Americans who believed the waters of the Mississippi were free to all and vigorously fought the attempts of the Spaniards to levy taxes on their cargoes.
The picture has good color and a very nice bamboo look frame.  In the lower left margin it says "Old Spanish Custom House - New Orleans Courtesy Illinois Central System".  In the lower right margin it is signed by Al Mettel, the artist.
The frame is 11-1/2" X 9-1/2" with the viewing area being 10-1/2" X 9".  The frame is in good vintage condition for its age, with very minor expected wear and no damage (see the photos).
Be sure to see all of the photos as they are considered a part of this description (use the zoom feature), and ask questions for anything you don't see because once this frame has been shipped, it cannot be returned or refunded.
This historic circa 1920's - 30's frame and colored
    chromolithograph
are a very rare find of railroad advertising memorabilia.  It could grace any room in the home or decorate a Bed & Breakfast, or office, with unlimited options.  The dust cover and hanging hardware are in good condition (see the photos), and the historical note is safely attached to the dust cover.
