Description
This Bern Hill poster was commissioned for General Electric's Electro-Motive Division (EMD) and features the famous California Zephyr of the Western Pacific Railroad. Bern Hill was a freehand artist famous for his marketing work for Electro-Motive Division in the 1950’]s. It is part of a series of promotional posters for GM's EMD Unit featuring their customer's trains. In 1903, the Western Pacific was one of the last major American railroads to be founded. It was financed by railroad mogul, Jay Gould, in order to compete with the Southern Pacific . It was famous for the Feather River Route, as emblazoned on its logo, and operated between Salt Lake City connecting it to Reno, Sacramento, Stockton, Oakland, and San Francisco. While the route featured 43 tunnels, it provided a route that had less snow than the SP's Donner Pass making year-round travel more reliable. The Western Pacific operated the famous California Zephyr along with the Burlington Route and Rio Grande that connected Chicago to Oakland via Salt Lake City. In 1982 the WP was purchased by the Union Pacific, which later acquired its rival Southern Pacific.
