UAC’s TurboTrain was an early high-speed, gas turbine train designed
by the Chesapeake & Ohio in the 1950s. It was manufactured by United
Aircraft and operated in Canada between 1968 and 1982 and in the US
between 1968 and 1976. C&O’s design incorporated the then-new Talgo
truck/suspension system and featured one of the first
tilting
suspension
system trains in North America.
United Aircraft (UAC) purchased the C&O patents. Their modified design
was similar to the original C&O version, but used turbine power instead of
Diesel. Engines were a version of Pratt & Whitney’s PT6 known as ST6,
downrated from 600 to 300 hp. The new design did not require a trans-
mission and was able to directly power the drivers.
The Turbo's final run was on October 31, 1982. Though they had an early
reputation for unreliability, according to CN's records rebuilt TurboTrains
had an excellent availability rate of over 97% over their careers.
Andy considers the unique clam-shell nose, and aircraft-like design one
of the most outstanding streamlined train designs of all time. Sadly none
of the UAC TurboTrains were preserved.
